Bringing Veterinary Innovation to Market: Vetlen’s Approach

The journey to launching new products is rarely straightforward. At Vetlen, we're committed to making that path clearer for veterinarians.

President of Vetlen Stephanie Morley, DVM, has spent the last decade working at the intersection of animal health and biotechnology. Her passion lies in translating innovations from human medicine into valuable tools for veterinary practices. Drawing from her experience as a small animal clinician, Dr. Morley is dedicated to providing practical solutions for her fellow veterinarians.

“It’s essential for us to focus on new product development,” Dr. Morley states. “We want to introduce innovations to veterinarians, not rehash products that have been on the human market for years. Vetlen Pouch is a game changer for clinical practice.”

Vetlen Pouch is a local drug delivery device that can be placed into a surgical site with an exteriorized catheter. The pouch has a rate-controlled membrane allowing for slow release of antibiotic. The exteriorized catheter of the device allows you to refresh the pouch with fresh antibiotics on a daily basis.

Dr. Morley leads the development of Vetlen Pouch, a local drug delivery device designed for horses and large breed dogs. She identifies three crucial aspects of the product development process at Vetlen:

1. Voice of the Customer
Listening to veterinarians and understanding their needs is vital. “Veterinarians are the MacGyvers of medicine,” Dr. Morley explains. “We often find ourselves needing solutions that simply don’t exist, so innovation becomes essential for providing the best care. Gathering feedback through surveys, interviews, beta trials, and case studies ensures that veterinarians’ voices are heard throughout the development process. Too often companies make products for customers without really understanding their needs and the product misses the mark. This is often true for human focused medical products because those companies don’t understand the differences in providing care for veterinary patients vs. human patients.”

2. Iteration
Bringing a product to market involves continuous trial and error. “We rely on beta trials, clinical data, and ongoing feedback to refine our products,” Dr. Morley emphasizes. “We understand how important it is for practitioners to see the data supporting our innovations. Additionally, we have introduced a customer experience program called Vouch for the Pouch. It’s Vetlen’s way of keeping our customers engaged with us, every step of the way. We ask veterinarians to sign up for the Vouch for the Pouch program in order to try the Vetlen Pouch and all we ask in return is that you share your experience with us and others by submitting a case study. We also offer resources to members like access to our blog, exclusive offers and updates, and an affiliate program. Our goal with the Vouch for the Pouch program is to keep learning together—there are so many amazing applications for Vetlen Pouch.”

3. Quality Manufacturing
Establishing reliable manufacturing partnerships and conducting thorough quality testing are crucial. “Veterinarians need devices they can trust—tools that are user-friendly and deliver consistent, positive outcomes for their patients. Manufacturing isn’t always the most glamourous part of the development process, but it’s a critical piece of the puzzle.”
