This presentation will address current antimicrobial stewardship principles relevant to equine practitioners. Antimicrobial resistance will be defined and clinical relevance described. Attendees will be introduced to antimicrobial stewardship guidelines and discuss their impact on the prescribing practices of equine practitioners.

Dr. Clare Ryan is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. A board-certified specialist in large animal internal medicine, she brings a passion for equine health, pharmacodynamics of antibiotics, infectious disease, and clinical teaching to veterinary students and clients. After earning her DVM from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2002, she went on to complete a PhD at the University of Florida in 2010. Dr. Ryan is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association. When she’s not in the clinic or classroom, she’s likely deep in a journal article—or talking books over tea.
